Hatchel, Tape Loom (reproduction), Cards (reproductions)
American
18th century and 20th century
Elizabeth Stephens' textile production supplemented the family income and continued during the Encampment. She likely used tools such as these to produce linen and wool. They were used to pull flax across the hatchel to separate the fibers from the plant casing. Carding combs were used to comb wool into rolls or "rolags." Wool yarn and linen thread was created on a spinning wheel and then woven on a loom.
